Crude: The Amazon Reality 

This Zine was a learning experience! I enjoy the making but it seem to be easier than what it really is. There are so many things you need to consider since the planning to be successful. As an amateur in  the art of zine/book making it was a little difficult to consider all! I like the idea of aware people about what is going on in the world through zine's :)

My zine for this small works is inspired in Oil Spills. I want to aware people about oil companies and how they exploit the amazon rain forest and how they invade ancestral tribes causing major damages to the environment and the community. I felt I had to speak about this topic because while I was growing up in Ecuador Chevron/Texaco was involve in a international trial because of the damages they cause to the Shuar's for their careless drilling. Also, in the lately years the Ecuadorian government want to allow Chinese oil companies drill oil from Yasuni National Park, a protected area where million of unique species live.

My Objects for the container are:

1. A pamphlet of why we have to end amazon crude
2. Invitation to sign petition to end amazon crude at www.amazonwatch.org
3. 2 glass bottles filled with tissue paper representing clean water and contaminated water
4. Stained money representing the dirty business of prioritizing economy rather than protect the amazon and ancestral cultures
5. A glass bulb representing the Shuar community and their knowledge

The container for my zine will be a box,very beautiful in the outside and all dusty and stained on the inside to resemble the damage oil companies produce on the amazon rain forest and create a contrast between the untouched amazon vs.  man touch amazon.

Landscapes: In Depth Project- Andria ( Invisible Cities)

Representation of Andria

For this in depth project I decided to choose the city of Andria from Calvino Invisible Cities. Andria call my attention because of the connection the inhabitants of the city have with the stars,planets, moons and constellations. I feel connected and a little influence by the phases of the moon as well.

Other thing that interest me was the personality of the citizens of Andria, the posses two great virtues:

1. Self-Confidence

2. Prudence

They not only think in themselves but in the risks and advantages of their actions in general.

At the beginning I thought of creating a type of planetary system/ constellations with stained glass but then I was afraid it might look too planetary system.

I focus  on the description of the city been artfully and in how the firmament change colors from orange to yellow. Also in how the city and the stars corresponded perfectly.

It was a challenge to stop thinking 2-D  and start working on 3 D stuff. 

I am proud of the process because I've been  experimenting with different techniques  and doing things that I never imagine before. Also, I been searching for different materials and trying to work bigger.  I really enjoy working with the yarn, the duck tape and the tissue paper because they are simple and colorful materials but you can used them in many ways and the result is eye catching. The most complicated part of the piece was the decision of how to arrange the lights so they resemble stars.

 This in depth project its been a challenge, This plan was my second idea because I decide the feather and rose plan was too Etsy and decorative. Since this project was release I had in mind that I wanted to do something related to  female power. After changing my mind about the feather and the rose I start to think what other object I can use for this purpose. I thought of using tampons but I did not know how to approach the items since is something so obvious. Then I remember that I had a whole bag of this medical arrows and that I should use them in the name of art. I did my research and I discovered that this medical arrows are sterilization accessories. My connection was between the sterilization and the organ that gives life and birth. I wanted to do something that contrast in order to make it powerful!

Ovary Fail: First Sketch

My first idea was to make an ovary with the medical arrows. 

It was halfway done but I was recommended to 

keep the ovary sacred because of it meaning. 

I debate what I needed to do in order to complete this task successfully and the process was really frustrating. I was running out of time  and just the idea of starting from zero was stressing. At the end I decide to keep the "ovary" piece for my own and start the metamorphosis project from zero. I am going to finish "the ovary"  and keep it for my space as a daily reminder of female power. 

Ovary Fail: Tracing

At the end I decide to start from zero without leaving my concept of "Female Power". I decide to make a conceptual vulva. I feel proud of the final result because I used materials and tools I never used before like a hot gun and spray paint. It was the first time I do something this abstract, but I think it work at my favor. I feel I took the failure of the ovary as an opportunity to grow and experiment. Even with the pressure of running out of time  I enjoy the experience of going out of my comfort zone and try something new.
